The next morning, she awoke refreshed, having slept almost eleven hours. After breakfast, she went to the lab and brushed her teeth with an extra minty paste, not wanting to smell coffee breath the next four hours inside the sealed suit. She pulled on the blue medical scrubs, warm socks, and nitrile gloves before wrapping a soft tape around her ankles and wrists. Then she inflated a lab suit and checked it for leaks.

Minutes later, she’d got herself inside the suit and connected an air hose before sealing it, then, unplugging the hose, opened the lab’s outer door. She closed it and waited until a green light indicated it was safe to open the inner door to the BSL-4. Once through, she connected to an air hose and swallowed to pop her ear drums against the pressure increase.

“I’m inside, Menal. Can you hear me okay?” she asked, testing the radio headset.

“I hear you. The reagents are in the locker. Did you sleep well?”

“Like the dead.”

“Let’s hope that’s only a metaphor,” said Menal.

Tatiana ignored the comment, opened the freezer, and pulled up the rack containing the plague from Almaty. A fog hung around the samples as she removed one small vial, then lowered the rack back into the liquid nitrogen. She placed the vial on the lab bench to thaw while she retrieved the reagents.

Today, she’d increase their supply of Yersinia pestis by allowing it to reproduce in Petri dishes. This process would take two days. When they had sufficient stock, she and Menal would begin the CRISPR process to cleave strands of the plague bacteria’s DNA near the rpsl gene and insert a modified section to mimic the streptomycin and trimoxazole resistance exhibited by the Madagascar plague infections.
